Wessex Archaeology has an office based in Wales. Wales has numerous sites of archaeological interest ranging from sites dating to the Mesolithic period up until Post Medieval times. The historic environment is rich; sites include prehistoric caves; mines; burial chambers; stone circles; hillforts; Roman forts; Romano-British villages; medieval castles; remains of the prominent slate industry; coastal structures and shipwrecks dating to all periods.
Known Archaeology
Wales is archaeologically famous for being the source of the building materials used for part of Stonehenge, the Blue Stones came from the Preseli hills of North Pembrokeshire. Wales currently has three UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage sites including the Castles and Town Walls of Edward I, in Gwynedd at Caernarfon, Conwy; Beaumaris and Harlech in north-west Wales; Blaenavon Industrial Landscape in south-east Wales and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal in north-east Wales.
Our Terrestrial Work
Wessex Archaeology has been involved in several projects throughout Wales and has collaborated with a number of other Welsh Archaeological Trusts. Terrestrially, Wessex Archaeology have worked on the A465, Wylfa Newydd, Llangefni link road, Llancaiach Fawr manor and The Old College in Aberystwyth.
Our Offshore Work
Offshore, we have been involved with the Holyhead Deep Green project, Scarweather Sands and Gwynt y Môr wind farm. Wessex Archaeology has been involved with five of the six protected wreck sites in Wales designated under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973. These include Pwll Fanog, Tal y Bont, The Diamond, The Smalls Viking Wreck Site and the submersible Resurgam.
Public Engagement, Outreach and Education
We have also been involved in numerous outreach and education projects in Wales, utilising bilingual materials where ever possible. The ability to send a Welsh speaking staff member to outreach events in Wales adds to our profile and allows us to offer site tours and open days to schools through the medium that they are taught in, subsequently,enhancing their educational experience. In 2017, a community dig and series of school tours coupled with open days were conducted on Anglesey. Volunteers were taught how to excavate and record features while members of the public and local school children visited the site and have tours conducted by a designated Welsh speaker. The excavation was also covered by national news and radio.
Curators
The Welsh Government's historic environment service is Cadw. Wessex Archaeology has worked closely with Cadw on a number of projects including on five of the six protected wreck sites (mentioned above) The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW) also play a vital role in the protection of monuments and wrecks. Their website, Archwilio – which means ‘to explore’ – catalogues the historic environment records of Wales and is freely available.

Mae gan Gymru nifer o safleoedd archeolegol o ddiddordeb, yn amrywio o safleoedd oes Mesolithic (c.7000 CC) hyd at y Canoloesoedd (c.1485 ymlaen). Mae’r amgylchedd hanesyddol yn gyfaethog gyda safleoedd yn cynnwys ogofeydd cynhanesyddol, mwyngloddfeydd, cloddfeydd, siambrau claddu, cylchoedd cerrig, bryngaerau, caerau Rhufeinig, pentrefi Rhufeinig-Brythonig, cestyll canoloesol, olion amlwg y diwydiant llechi, strwythurau arfordirol a llongddrylliadau o bob oes.
Yr Archeoleg
Mae Cymru yn enwog am archeoleg o bob math, gan gynnwys y cerrig gleision a ddaeth o fryniau Preseli yn Sir Benfro a ddefnyddiwyd i adeiladu Côr y Cewri (Stonehenge). Prosiectau Daearol
Mae Wessex Archaeology wedi bod yn rhan o nifer o brosiectau drwy Gymru ac wedi gweithio yn agos gyda Ymddiriedolaeth Archeolegol Cymreig sydd yn gweithio drwy Gymru. Yn ddaearol, mae Wessex Archaeology wedi gweithio ar yr A465, Wylfa Newydd, lôn newydd Llangefni, maeonor Llancaiach Fawr ac yr Hen Goleg yn Aberystwyth.
Prosiectau Morol

Ymgysylltu gyda’r cyhoedd, Allgymorth a Addysg
Rydym hefyd wedi bod yn rhan o nifer o brosiectau allgymorth ac addysg yng Nghymru, gan ddefnyddio deunydd dwyieithog lle posib. Mae’r gallu i yrru aelod o staff sydd yn siarad Cymraeg i ddigwyddiadau ar draws Gymru yn cryfhau ein proffil fel cwmni ac yn rhoi y gallu i ni gynnig teithiau a diwrnodau agored dwyieithog o safleoedd i ysgolion yn defnyddio eu mamiaith, sydd yn gwneud y profiad yn fwy ddealladwy iddynt. Yn 2017, cafodd cloddfa gymunedol a theithiau ysgolion i redeg ar Ynys Môn gan Wessex Archaeology. Roedd gwirfoddolwyr yn cael eu hyfforddi ac eu dysgu sut i gloddio ac i recordio nodweddion tra roedd y cyhoedd a phlant ysgol leol yn cael dod i weld y safle ac i gael teithiau wedi eu harwain yn Gymraeg. Cafodd y gloddfa ei darlledu ar y newyddion a radio cenedlaethol.
Curaduron
Cadw ydy gwasanaeth amgylchedd hanesyddol Llywodraeth Cymru. Mae Wessex Archaeology wedi gweithio yn agos gyda Cadw ar nifer o brosiectau gan gynnwys pump o’r chwech llongddrylliad mewn dŵr Cymreig sydd wedi cael ei amddiffyn o dan y Protection of Wrecks Act 1973 (a drafodwyd uchod). Mae Comisiwn Brenhinol Henebion Cymru (CBHC) hefyd yn chwarae rhan mawr yng nghadwraeth henebion a llongddrylliadau. Mae ei gwefan o’r enw Archwilio yn catalogu cofnodion amgylchedd hanesyddol Cymru ac i’w gal am ddim.
