A comprehensive scheme of flood protection works by Sheffield City Council has involved the archaeological evaluation of a riverside site and the architectural survey of associated standing buildings.
The excavations have exposed the well preserved remains of a former cementation furnace, one of only three where there are surviving standing remains in the City. A second important discovery is an intact cellar complex from a former crucible furnace, again providing significant new evidence for 19th century steel industry.
