Bramham Park
The Wessex Archaeology Sheffield Team recently took part in a study day for the Yorkshire Gardens Trust, at Bramham Park, West Yorkshire – a Grade I listed house, park and gardens.
Over the last two years, Wessex Archaeology has undertaken archaeological works in the gardens at Bramham to inform reinstatement works of a former Step Cascade, Rocky Cascade and Parterre Pool within the gardens. These works included pre-restoration archaeological excavation and an archaeological watching brief during the restoration groundworks.
The original cascade dated to the early 18th century, but due to various engineering problems, it was abandoned and grassed over by the mid-18th century. The Rocky Cascade has recently been restored, and the Parterre Pool reinstated.
The archaeological works and findings were presented to the Yorkshire Gardens Trust, alongside talks from the architects Rodney Melville and Partners and Natural England.
