On Wednesday 16 October, Chairman of Watford Borough Council, Cllr. Steve Rackett launched the SW Herts Archaeological & Historical Society’s 2013/14 Lecture Programme. The speaker for the evening was archaeologist, Dr Alistair Barclay, from Wessex Archaeology. He described excavations at Kingsmead Quarry, Horton, Berkshire, which were generously funded by the owners, Cemex UK.

Chairman of the society, Laurie Elvin (left of the photo) thanked the speaker, especially for having brought some of the finds for members to see. Dr Barclay is holding a complete Middle Bronze Age cooking pot, over 3,000 years old. The site revealed evidence of human activity since the end of the Ice Age and included four Early Neolithic houses (3750 BC), which are rare.

Future lectures offered by the Society include historic aerial photos, the history of wooden boats, geology of SW Hertfordshire and history of gunpowder (for further details: 07784807108).
