For the fourth year running, staff and pupils at Meonstoke C of E School held a Saxon Day. They were assisted by pupils from Droxford Junior School, local volunteers and re-enactors, staff from Winchester Museums Service and by Wessex Archaeology’s Sue Nelson.

This year was more ambitious than ever, with the young Saxon warriors marching from Meonstoke to Corhampton with blood-curdling yells of ‘We are the Saxons!’ sending chills through the locals’ hearts.

Banners of the various Saxon Kingdoms were carried with Sue, fittingly, being given the Wessex banner to hold.

Back at the school the children took part in a number of activities, learning about archaeology and about Saxon warfare and domestic life.

The day culminated in the now traditional re-enactment of the Battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings, with a tale from Beowulf thrown in for good measure.

These Saxon Days would not be possible without the vision and enthusiasm of Peter O’Sullivan and the wholehearted support of Head Teacher Linda Coumbe. Thanks to them for once more inviting Wessex Archaeology to be part of this event.
