Wessex Archaeology is undertaking the excavation of a small rural Iron Age domestic settlement which has been found at the site of the new housing development at Ridgeway Farm, Purton, West Swindon.
The settlement, which covers an area of a football pitch, contains six round houses associated with storage pits, four-poster granaries and possible lean-too structures. Finds recovered include loom weights for weaving, quern stones for grinding corn, evidence of iron working and various personal items.
The settlement may have continued in the Roman period, when there is evidence of possible large scale clay extraction immediately to the south. This clay may have been used by known pottery and kiln sites which have been previously investigated at sites in nearby Purton and Shaw.
