Students from the Pilgrim School discovered archaeology at the Wessex Archaeology office in Rochester October 2012.

The enthusiastic 7-9 year olds learnt about the work of archaeologists and the different processes involved in archaeology, before diving into a range of hands-on activities. This visit formed part of the school’s ‘university week’ where pupils get to experience a range of exciting activities and trips.

The budding archaeologists had a go at excavating artefacts from sandpit digs, dressing up as archaeologists, reassembling broken pottery and being finds detectives. The group was then given a tour of the finds processing room and had the chance to handle artefacts and ask questions to the specialists.

This workshop was delivered by Wessex Archaeology’s Learning & Access (L&A) Team. To find out more about the work of the L&A Team visit www.wessexarch.co.uk/learning
