Week four of my internship and week two of Exploring Tinsley Manor has flown by! The children at Tinsley Junior School were incredibly enthusiastic once they’d mastered techniques like trowelling and sieving. We opened up a fifth and final trench after making good progress with the first four. Two of the trenches uncovered walls, probably representing buildings from manor house farm. The pace of the excavation really picked up once the topsoil had been removed, which took a lot of effort!

It was inspiring to work with the volunteers, especially to see their level of dedication even once the children had finished for the day. Sally will be continuing classroom based archaeology lessons with the children which will hopefully inspire them to continue to pursue their obvious love of the discipline. Next week looks to be full of surprises again as I’ll be starting on some new projects.
