Exploring Archaeology
Wessex Archaeology were pleased to support Salisbury Museum’s Festival of Archaeology weekend during the hot summer of 2022.
Our Community Engagement team, supported by specialists from across the company, brought hands-on activities that enabled visitors to explore different aspects of archaeology.
As well as meeting experienced archaeologists, the Wessex Event Tent hosted Environmental Archaeology, 3D Virtual Reality experiences and Chocolate Geoarchaeology.

‘The Amesbury Archer: 20 Years On’ Film Premiere
On Saturday 23 July 2022, the screening of our new feature documentary ‘The Amesbury Archer: 20 Years On’ took place at Salisbury Museum’s Festival of Archaeology. The film includes interviews with the excavators and the progress in research on the Amesbury Archer over the last 20 years. After the premiere, Phil Harding, Andrew Fitzpatrick, and Matt Leivers hosted a special Q & A for the audience.

Salisbury Sites
Phil Harding was also on hand to discuss his upcoming book, ‘Joining the Dots: uniting Salisbury’s past through holes in the ground’. Due out later this year, ‘Joining the Dots’ will tell the story of Salisbury through the archaeology with new analysis and materials being brought to light.

Beyond the Stones
One of the first local screenings of our new feature film took place on Day 2 of the Salisbury Museum Festival of Archaeology. Created with the National Trust to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site, this film focuses on both Stonehenge and Avebury as complementary focal points within the World Heritage Site. ’Beyond the Stones’ shows how including the Avebury complex provides a balanced perspective on the wider heritage landscape and the ongoing research which will continue to enhance our understanding.
After the ‘Beyond the Stones’ screening Phil Harding, and Matt Leivers from Wessex Archaeology , explored how we can add to the Stonehenge story.
