Issue 14 of Dredged Up is now online. The popular newsletter supports the Marine Aggregates Protocol for Archaeological Discoveries and raises awareness of the scheme, which has been in operation since 2005.
The seabed around Britain is a rich resource: as a habitat, a source of minerals, as land for development and of archaeological evidence. All of these factors need to be balanced and managed to ensure the continued well-being of our offshore environments.
To protect heritage during aggregate dredging, Wessex Archaeology implements a reporting Protocol on behalf of the British Marine Aggregate Producers Association, The Crown Estate and English Heritage. Any archaeological material found amongst dredged loads, or on the seabed during dredging, is reported through the Protocol.
