...and a little bit of history

On Sunday we attended the Chubb Centenary Celebration at the Shrewton Recreation Ground. The day showcased Shrewton; celebrating the village’s link to the centenary of Cecil Chubb of Shrewton gifting Stonehenge to the nation. Cecil and Mary Chubb also attended the event in cardboard cut-out form. The day included several short fast paced cricket matches (representatives from the Prehistoric Society – wearing suffragette sashes, Heritage Professionals and the Shrewton cricket team), Stonehenge Trilithon Competition with some very inventive creations, and a host of stalls representing village clubs and other organisations, and music from Shrewton's Silver Band. The day ended with prize giving and a quiz.

Food and drink flowed including excellent ice creams from the English Heritage van. The gentle thwack of the cricket ball marked the afternoon, and unsurprisingly the Shrewton team won but the other teams put in valiant efforts in the heat. Many thanks to the organisers for a splendid day, and particular thanks to Jim for the loan of a gazebo!
