Originally thought to be the remains of a shipwreck, this site was surveyed by Wessex Archaeology in order to confirm this identification.
In August 2002, WA conducted a geophysical survey of the area using sidescan sonar and magnetometer. The results identified a pipe-shaped reflection, thought to be the mostly buried hull of a wreck. Although the magnetometer results were not considered very strong when compared to the results produced from other metal wrecks.
Later that year, WA undertook a dive survey of the site. Divers observed a length of circular iron pipe measuring 27m but continuing into the seabed at either end. The pipe had a diameter of one metre and was attached to rectangular iron blocks which were then attached to an iron base plate beneath. The visible structure stood one metre proud of the seabed.
As a result, this structure has been identified as part of a late 20th century pipeline, the function of which is currently unknown.
