Thames Tideway Tunnel foreshore sites

Client: Bazalgette Tunnel Ltd (Tideway

Sector: Combined sewer

Summary

The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a 25km combined sewer currently under construction. The tunnel will intercept, store and ultimately transfer sewage waste away from the River Thames, and will help cope with London's growing population. 

Our work

  • Archaeological evaluation of 11 foreshore sites along the River Thames

  • Innovative approach whilst minimizing person-time in dangerous environments

  • Archaeological field investigation, borehole & auger survey, topographical laser survey and geophysics were used

  • Geoarchaeological deposit modelling was used to predict the buried resource and target mitigation for construction phase

South Ashford developments (Various sites) 

Client: CgMs Consulting Services and Kent County Council

Summary

The South Ashford development represents 7,250 homes (2,175 affordable), a 142 hectare public park along with new schools, 
a primary healthcare space, play spaces and ecological areas to be protected.

East Kent Access Road

Client: Kent County Council  

Sector: Infrastructure 

Summary

Kent County Council’s construction of a new road link, the second phase of the East Kent Access (EKA2), on the south side of the Isle of Thanet provided a rare opportunity to undertake large-scale investigations of this important archaeological landscape. 

Our work

  • The Oxford Wessex Archaeology (OWA) joint venture project involved over 150 archaeologists 
  • Undertook a series of excavations, covering 48 hectares, along the 6.5km route of the new road 

  • The largest archaeological excavation in Britain in 2010

  • Wide-ranging programme of community outreach events took place including open days, school visits, roadshows and public talks, as well as the community excavation of one of the Early Bronze Age ring ditches
