Local volunteers have been processing Iron Age finds unearthed by teenagers on Salisbury Plain.

The Iron Age artefacts were excavated two weeks ago from Chisenbury Midden, a man-made mound of feasting waste. Excavating this fascinating site was a group of teenagers participating in the Jon Egging Trust’s Blue Skies Programme. Read about the project and the excavation here.

Meeting on a weekly basis, Wessex Archaeology’s enthusiastic volunteer team works hard to process artefacts from our non-commercial sites. Processing artefacts enables specialist analysis, and typically involves washing, marking and packaging the finds. The artefacts from Chisenbury Midden include animal bones, bone artefacts, worked flint and beautifully decorated pottery, including examples with chalk inlay.
